Academic Advising and Career Assistance

Take advantage of a comprehensive range of services to help reach your academic and career goals.  Meet with a CAP Center advisor to discuss activities such as identifying interests and skills, choosing a major, starting a job search campaign, writing a resume, and preparing for an interview.  You may schedule an appointment or stop by during our extended walk-in hours.  During walk-in hours, no appointment is needed.

Resource Center

The Career Resource Center maintains numerous printed and electronic resources to assist with major and career exploration, company research, resume development, interview skills, and job search techniques. Our library contains over 700 publications pertinent to educational and occupational exploration. Also located in the Center are computers for on-line research and to take self-assessment inventories such as DISCOVER and MyRoad to better understand your interests, abilities and values. Visit the Career Resource Center to relax in our comfortable reading environment and take the time to ponder the possibilities of future career achievements.

Self-Assessment

Ever wonder if your major is a good match for your interests and skills?  Would you like to explore career opportunities related to your major?  The CAP Center can help!  Assessments available to students and alumni include DISCOVER, MyRoad, Strong Interest Inventory and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.  Contact the CAP Center for details.  You can learn more about yourself, your major, and job possibilities.  Call now!

EXPERIENCE

EXPERIENCE is a one-stop-shop for your career search needs.  Search for full-time, part-time, summer, and internship positions.  Have your resume critiqued and posted in the electronic resume bank.  Upload cover letters and supporting credentials to include in the on-line application process.  View upcoming career fairs and on campus interview events.  It’s convenient, user-friendly, and FREE!  The EXPERIENCE system is a web-based program accessible from any computer with internet access 24 hours a day, seven days week.   And it’s only for Rowan students and alumni.

Preparing Your Resume

Make sure your resume makes a positive first impression with potential employers. Attend a resume writing workshop, submit your resume to be critiqued via EXPERIENCE or take advantage of the individual resume writing assistance available at the CAP Center. For individual help with resume or cover letter writing, make an appointment with a CAP Center Advisor or stop by the CAP Resource Center.  Bring a draft of your resume on a flash disk, CD-RW, or saved in e-mail.

Off-Campus Federal Work-Study Employment Program

Interested in gaining experience in your chosen field?  Do you have a federal work study award? Want to earn a competitive hourly wage for your present part-time employment?  If the answer to these questions is yes, then you need to work in the Off-Campus Work-Study Program! Dozens of pre-professional jobs in various fields await you.

Visit the Financial Aid Office and obtain a Student Authorization Form indicating your FWS award amount. Once completed, make an appointment with Carol Eigenbrot by calling 856-256-4456.

Resumania                                                    

A great resume requires your personal time and effort.  There is no fill-in-the-blank resume format that will effectively communicate your particular skills, interests, and experience to an employer.  Knowing the information that should be included and then adding your own style is most effective in portraying your individuality and potential for success.  This workshop can show you how.


The Powers and Dangers of Technology     

Have you ever Googled your name?  Maybe not, but employers are now using the web to screen candidates during the hiring process.  Sites such as My Space, Facebook, and LiveJournal allow others to get a sneak peak into your life.  So what does your profile say about you?  In addition to managing your online profile, have you ever sent an email to professors or potential employers?  You probably have, but did you use proper email etiquette?  Learn how to use the internet to your advantage in a variety of ways to establish a polished reputation both in person and online.

It seems like everybody is talking about internships these days.  Because of the obvious benefits of these experiences, many college students are hoping to complete an internship sometime before they graduate.  Unfortunately, internships will not come to you.  So if you are clueless about how to find an internship and not even sure where to start looking, Finding Your Dream Internship, will give your searching strategies a boost!

Looking at You: What You Can Learn Through Self-Assessment 
            


We all base our decisions on the kind of information we have about a given situation. Choosing a major involves career research and some self-exploration. If you are not sure what major or career you want to pursue, it is safe to begin looking at YOU. What do you enjoy doing? What do you do well? The answers you come up with will help you identify elements that can lead to satisfaction in your career. Commit some time to preparing your personal inventory.
