INTERNSHIP FAIR

Internship Fair Fall 2010
Location: TBA
This event provides employers and students the opportunity to meet and discuss potential internship positions.

CAREER FAIR TIPS

A career fair is an opportunity for you to meet with employer representatives on an informal basis to discuss career information and employment opportunities. It is another form of networking that can help you get your foot in the door of an employer through careful planning. A major part of planning process for a career fair is developing a list of questions to ask the employer representatives. Also, research the employers that plan to attend. This gives you a heads up on the employers you are interested in approaching.

APPROPRIATE DRESS

Pick out a professional outfit. Most career day fairs recommend that you dress as if you are going on an interview. It is better to be overdressed than underdressed at a career fair. Suits are appropriate for both men and women.

Men

  • Two-piece suit (solid colors vs. print or patterns). Stick to conservative colors such as black, navy blue, dark brown and dark gray. Avoid wearing single breasted suits with more than four buttons and suits with bold pinstripes.
  • Wear a white shirt or a light color shirt
  • Tie pattern should be simple.
  • Wear polished shoes with knee-length socks that avoid exposing skin.

Women

  • Suit with knee-length skirt and tailored blouse.
  • Pantsuits are more acceptable now, but save them for after you obtain the job.
  • Keep accessories and make-up simple.
  • Wear closed toe shoes without straps. Also, the heels should be no more than an inch and half.

Proper Career / Job Fair Attire

SOME QUESTIONS TO ASK EMPLOYER REPRESENTATIVES

  • What characteristics does a successful person have at your organization?
  • Could you describe a typical day?
  • What are the best and worst parts of your job?
  • How important are professional degrees or credentials for entrance and promotion in this field?
  • Is demand for your kind of work increasing, stabilizing, or decreasing?
  • How could you utilize my skills?
  • Are there internship possibilities with your organization?
  • Is there anything I can do to make myself more qualified for this type of work?

SOME QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

  • Will I be seeking information only?
  • Will I want to generate interviews?
  • Should I dress in business attire?
  • Is my resume ready to distribute?
  • What questions should I ask?
  • Should I bring a pad and pen?
  • Will I need to think about follow-up?
  • Where can I get further information?

TIPS FOR NAVIGATING A CAREER FAIR

  • Turn your cell phone off.
  • Be independent – you look more serious walking alone rather than with a group of friends.
  • Make a good first impression – greet the employer and introduce yourself. Smile, make eye contact, and use a firm handshake. Use your one-minute script about yourself to start conversations with employers.
  • It is important that you bring well written copies of your resume to disseminate to employer representatives.
  • Make sure that you acquire the business cards from the employer representatives that you are interested in working for.
  • Keep a record of your correspondences during the Career Fair to use in your follow-up.
  • Always send a thank you card or email to the employer representative and reiterate your interest in working for them.
