Graduate School Planning Checklist

  • Research schools and programs of study
  • Research financial aid (public and private sources)
  • Check with your employee benefits department to see if they offer tuition assistance (working adults)
  • Talk to students and faculty at the schools you are interested in attending
  • Check application dates
  • Contact financial aid office at the school you want to attend (check deadlines, some are far in advance)
  • Contact test preparation services for courses, dates and locations
  • Check GRE, GMAT, LSAT or other appropriate bulletins for test dates/application and TOEFL foreign students
  • Complete the application forms
  • Begin working on your graduate school essays
  • Schedule an interview (if applicable)
  • Prepare a summary of work experience (if applicable)
  • Send for transcripts from your undergraduate institution
  • Call people / work contacts for letters of reference
  • Prepare a statement of financial resources (if necessary)
  • Complete financial aid application Graduate and Professional School Financial Aid Service (GAPSFAS) form
  • Be sure you’ve completed all the requirements/documents and include application fee when sending your application
