Crisis Services

What to do when you or a friend has been sexually assaulted.

  1. Get to a safe place as soon as possible.
  2. Preserve all physical evidence of the assault.
    • Do NOT shower, bathe, douche, or brush your teeth.
    • Save all of the clothing you were wearing at the time of the assault by placing each item in a separate paper bag.
    • Do not disturb anything in the area where the assault occurred.
  3. Contact someone to assist and advocate for you.
    • On weekdays between 8:30 and 4:30, call the Rowan Counseling Center at 256-4222, and a counselor will respond immediately to assist you.
    • Evenings and weekends, call Rowan Public Safety at 256-4911, and ask to speak with the Counselor on Call. You will be asked to provide your name, phone number, and location, and a counselor will respond shortly to assist you.
  4. Go to a hospital emergency department or the Rowan University Student Health Services for a medical exam as soon as possible.
    • To treat any resulting injuries caused by the assault, including any internal injuries of which you may be unaware.
    • To receive preventive treatment for unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
    • To preserve physical evidence for possible later prosecution.
    • Immediately after a sexual assault, many individuals say they do not want to prosecute their assailant. However, survivors often reconsider and later wish to pursue legal action. The evidence collected during a medical exam can later help successfully convict the assailant.
    • The following local hospital emergency rooms provide specially trained nurses and comprehensive care to victims of sexual assault:
    • Kennedy Hospital, 435 Hurfville-Crosskeys Rd, Washington Township, 582-2500
    • Underwood Hospital, 509 N. Broad St., Woodbury, 856-853-2001
    • Students needing transport to a hospital Emergency Room should contact Rowan Public Safety at 256-4911.
  5. If you want to report the assault, notify the police or campus security.
    • On campus - Rowan Public Safety - 256-4911
    • Off campus - Glassboro Police Department - 881-1500 or 911.
    • Filing a report with the police does not oblige you to press charges or pursue legal action.
    • You are encouraged to report the details of the assault even if you choose not to prosecute.
    • The information you provide about your assailant may be helpful in apprehending a suspect so another victim can prosecute.
  6. Talk with a counselor who is trained to assist victims of sexual assault.
    • The Rowan Counseling and Psychological Services Center provides confidential counseling free of charge to currently enrolled Rowan University students.
    • CPSC staff will work as advocates and aid students in connecting to both on- and off-campus resources.
