About New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation is our January orientation session for freshmen and transfer students beginning classes in the spring term. An optional Parent & Family Orientation programs is held concurrently with New Student Orientation.

The 2012 New Student Orientation program will be held on Monday, January 9, 2012. Check-in will begin at 8 a.m. in Wilson Hall and orientation programming will begin promptly at 8:45 a.m.

All new students are strongly encouraged to attend an orientation program. Students transferring to Rowan with less than 30 credits are required to attend orientation. If you are unable to attend the on-campus orientation program on Monday, January 9, you will be sent information about our online orientation program in February. You must complete orientation (online or in-person) before you register for fall term classes.

If you previously attended Rowan, you are not required to attend orientation, but are encouraged to do so to learn about any policies that may have changed or new resources available to you.

If you have already registered for classes, we encourage you to attend orientation to meet other students, learn about campus resources, and fulfill any orientation requirements (see above). If you have already registered for classes, the Peer Referral and Orientation Staff (PROS) will assist you in completing other campus business (such as placing your textbook order, getting your RowanCard ID, etc.) while other students are registering.

Attending New Student Orientation 2012

Students who have confirmed their admission to Rowan University for the spring term 2012 will receive an invitation to attend New Student Orientation. Students are asked to check with their parents & family members to see if they would like to attend Parent & Family Orientation, and then reserve a spot at orientation online.

Basic Skills/Placement Test Requirements:
Transfer Students with less than 30 credits who are not transferring credits for college level math or reading are required to take Placement Exams. Please call the Academic Success Center at 856-256-4259 to verify your exemption or arrange a testing date prior to attending orientation. You are unable to register for fall term courses until testing is complete.

The following Basic Skills Tests/Placement Exams are required of all freshmen:
Reading Comprehension: exempt if SAT critical reading score is 550 or above
Elementary Algebra: exempt if SAT math score is 550 or above
College-Level Mathematics: required for Biological Science, Business, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physical Science majors
Performance and score on the SAT Reasoning Essay (writing portion) will be evaluated for placement. Students will be placed in the appropriate writing courses to address their needs.

These tests should be completed prior to attending orientation. Questions about basic skills testing should be directed to the Academic Success Center at 856-256-4259. You are unable to register for fall term courses until testing is complete.

We are unable to provide housing during the orientation program. If your or your guests need overnight accommodations, please see information about local hotels.

Students with special needs:
If you have a condition that might affect your participation in orientation, OSLP will coordinate any arrangements you may need while you are on campus. If you did not indicate any necessary accommodations when you registered for orientation, please contact our office immediately; some arrangements take at least two weeks to arrange. You may also want to contact the Academic Success Center to discuss your needs for the upcoming academic year (856-256-4259).

Banner Tutorial:
Incoming students should view the Banner Registration Tutorial prior to orientation online. This tutorial will introduce you to the services available through Banner, including course registration. Your academic advisors will expect that you are comfortable using Banner to search for classes when you meet with them at orientation. See more registration information.

Course Registration:
You are eligible for academic advising during orientation for the major listed in your invitation e-mail only. If you would like to change your major, please contact Admissions (877-RU-ROWAN, 856-256-4200, or All students will meet individually with a faculty or staff academic advisor, select courses, and register for your fall term classes during orientation. Some academic departments also offer advising in advance of transfer orientation.

Directions to Campus, Parking, and Orientation Program Check-In:
Please see directions to campus. For students who wish to drive to orientation, parking will be available in Lots A or B.

New Student Orientation begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, January 9, 2012 at Wilson Hall and will conclude after course registration (by 5 p.m.).

What to bring to orientation:
Your Rowan Banner ID number, network username, and passwords
Comfortable walking shoes
Comfortable clothing, appropriate for the weather
Photo ID
Copy of any CB, CLEP, or AP exam results
Your credit evaluation and/or most recent college transcript

Orientation Expectations

We expect students to make their own reservations for orientation (and to make the parent & family reservations as well). Students are responsible for creating their Rowan University computing account and keeping this information safe and secure. Students should not share this information with anyone in order to protect the confidentiality of student records. See the complete Acceptable Use Policy for more information.

It is our goal for students to build a relationship with their advisors as well as learn the necessary skills to register on their own in future terms. Therefore, we expect students to register for classes with the assistance of the professional academic advisors only, and not their parents or family members.

Parent & Family Orientation

An optional Parent & Family Orientation program is held concurrently with New Student Orientation, but students and their parents & adult family members will follow separate orientation schedules.

Orientation Reservations

Please discuss with your parents and adult family members* whether or not they would like to attend Parent & Family Orientation. You will be asked to enter contact information for each guest attending orientation with you in the online system. *We do not recommend that young children attend the program, no child-care services are available.

You are eligible for academic advising during orientation for the major listed in your invitation e-mail only. If you would like to change your major, please contact Admissions (877-RU-ROWAN, 856-256-4200, or prior to completing your orientation reservations.

You will reserve your spot at orientation after creating an account with our reservation system. You will need your Rowan Banner ID number (see your e-mail invitation or the mailing address label on your postal invitation). You will specificy an e-mail address and password of your choosing as your log in credentials.

Please reserve your spot at orientation by December 22.
