New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation is our January orientation session for freshmen and transfer students beginning classes in the spring term. An optional Parent & Family Orientation programs is held concurrently with New Student Orientation.

The 2013 New Student Orientation program will be held on Monday, January 7, 2013. Check-in will begin at 8 a.m. in Wilson Hall and orientation programming will begin promptly at 8:45 a.m. You must reserve your spot at orientation in advance to attend.

The online reservation system for New Student Orientation is not yet open. We anticipate the system opening for reservations on Monday, November 5.

Information for Freshmen

Basic Skills/Placement Exam Requirements

The following Basic Skills Tests/Placement Exams are required of all freshmen:

  • Reading Comprehension: exempt if SAT critical reading score is 550 or above
  • Elementary Algebra: exempt if SAT math score is 550 or above
  • College-Level Mathematics: required for Biological Science, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physical Science majors
  • Performance and score on the SAT Reasoning Essay (writing portion) will be evaluated for placement. Students will be placed in the appropriate writing courses to address their needs.

These tests should be completed prior to attending orientation. Questions about basic skills testing should be directed to the Academic Success Center at 856-256-4259. You are unable to register for fall term courses until testing is complete.

Basic Skills/Placement Exam Requirements

Transfer students with less than 30 credits who are not transferring credits for college level math or reading are required to take Placement Exams. Please call the Academic Success Center at 856-256-4259 to verify your exemption or arrange a testing date prior to attending orientation. You are unable to register for fall term courses until testing is complete.

Orientation Program Information

The following information is sent in the orientation confirmation:

New Student Orientation begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, January 7, 2013 at Wilson Hall and will conclude after course registration (by 5 p.m.).

ACCOMMODATIONS:
We are unable to provide housing for students during the orientation program. If you need overnight accommodations, visit

STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS:
If you have a condition that might affect your participation in orientation, OSLP will coordinate any arrangements you may need while you are on campus. If you did not indicate any necessary accommodations when you registered for orientation, please contact our office immediately; some arrangements take at least two weeks to arrange. You may also want to contact the Academic Success Center to discuss your needs for the upcoming academic year (856-256-4259).

BANNER TUTORIAL:
Incoming students should view the Banner Registration Tutorial prior to orientation online. This tutorial will introduce you to the services available through Banner, including course registration. Your academic advisors will expect that you are comfortable using Banner to search for classes when you meet with them at orientation. WHAT TO BRING TO ORIENTATION:

  • Your Rowan Banner ID number, network username, and passwords
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Comfortable clothing, appropriate for the weather
  • #2 pencils
  • Photo ID
  • Copy of any CB, CLEP, or AP exam results
  • Transfer students: Your credit evaluation and/or most recent college transcript
