Resident Director - Job Description
The Resident Director works directly under the Assistant Directors and deals with a wide range of residence hall/apartment and residential life concerns. The RD’s responsibilities include staff supervision, community development, and crisis intervention. RD’s also conduct case conferences and judicial hearings for policy infractions. RD’s are expected to work an additional 20 hours per week sitting building office hours. Much of the RD’s work occurs during evening hours in the residence halls
Staff Supervision
- Direct staff to reach team goals.
- Serve as a resource to all staff and residents.
- Maintain knowledge of building and floor concerns.
- Serve as a positive role model for staff students.
- Monitor and evaluate Resident Assistant staff performance.
- Meet individually with Resident Assistant staff on a regular basis
- Assist with recruitment and selection of Resident Assistants.
- Assist and support hall staff using confrontation and crisis intervention skills.
Community Building Functions
- Direct and assist Resident Assistants with community building.
- Aid Assistant Director with all administrative functions concerning community building and hall/campus activities.
- Direct and assist Resident Assistants with community service projects.
- Serve as RHA advisor
Administrative Functions
- Prepare necessary reports, records, etc., as directed by office staff, in a thorough, usable, and timely fashion.
- Serve as a liaison between assigned building and Office or Residence Life/Housing.
- Attend weekly RD staff meetings, in-service training sessions, and all appropriate retreats, workshops, or seminars assigned by the Office of Residence Life/Housing.
- Conduct staff meetings on a weekly basis.
- Be available in apartment on a daily basis.
- Enforce university and residence life/housing policies.
- Be familiar with, and act as, referral to campus and community resources.
- Develop and monitor staff duty coverage schedule.
- Assist with campus weekly duty coverage.
- Complete and submit work orders for maintenance and custodial concerns on a daily basis.
- Follow up with staff, students, and Office of Residence Life/Housing on completed work orders.
- Conduct building fire drills in conjunction with Public Safety each semester.
- Manage the reservation of hall common areas.
- Assume any other responsibilities assigned by the Office of Residence Life/Housing
- Carry Cell Phone at all times! 24 hours/7days a week.
Judicial Process
- Serve as a liaison between the professional staff and in-hall staff members concerning all judicial matters.
- Know and interpret university discipline philosophy for staff and students.
- Support all university and residence life/housing regulations.
- Be on call during evening hours to assist staff and Public Safety with judicial concerns, infractions, emergencies, etc.
- Complete all judicial affairs paperwork and subunit to the Office of Residence Life & University Housing & Asst. Dean of Students Office.
- Issue sanction notices for incidents in your area in a timely basis.
