Apprentice Peer-Mentor Benefits and Responsibilities

Upon advancement as an apprentice peer-mentor, participants will be required along their Peer-Mentor to complete an Apprentice/Peer-Mentor Contract.  Participation benefits and requirements at this level will be as follows:

Apprentice Peer-Mentor Benefits

  1. Public recognition as an apprentice peer-mentor and awarded a certificate at the fall opening ceremony with the titles of Apprentice Sisterlinks or Apprentice Focused Peers to designate participation in Ujima or the male component accordingly.
  2. Eligible for paid employment with the mentoring program office.

Apprentice Peer-Mentor Responsibilities
In order to participate at this level and to be in good standing with the mentoring program, Apprentice Peer-Mentors MUST be willing to serve for a full academic year and will:

  1. Outline clear achievable short term goals for the course of the academic year (some possible goals may include: make use of the CAP center; chose a major by the end of fall semester; complete a solid resume; apply for internships; attain, maintain, or exceed a 2.75 GPA).
  2. Respond in a timely manner to correspondence from the mentoring program office and from their Faculty/Staff mentor.
  3. Meet with their peer-mentors twice a month in their first semester and once a month in their second semester to receive general support and guidance/training on peer-mentoring.
  4. Discuss frankly with their peer-mentors any issues or problems they may be facing in order to get support in resolving such challenges and will make use of student support services appropriately.
  5. Meet with their mentee (First year students) once a week in their first semester and twice a month in their second semester.
  6. Attend and encourage their mentee to attend all appropriate program meetings and workshops and activities.
  7. Attend Peer-Mentor training at the beginning of each semester.
  8. Serve as advocates of the program to their peers, inviting students who are not involved in the program to come to meetings and/or request a peer-mentor.
  9. Participate in at least one service activity each semester.
  10. Attend the Professional Mentor/Potential Mentee Meet and Greet Luncheon at the end of the spring semester.

Advancement Requirements

  1. Completion of the above requirements.
  2. A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75.
  3. Completion of a Peer-Mentor Application.
