Booksignings for Rowan Alum and Professor?s Haunted New Jersey to be Held During Homecoming CelebrationOctober 10, 2004
Getting geared up for Halloween? If so, your ?to-do? list should include picking up Haunted New Jersey: Ghosts and Strange Phenomena of the Garden State, the perfect guidebook to New Jersey ghosts and ghouls, at Rowan University on Saturday, October 16.
The Rowan University Alumni Association is sponsoring booksignings at 9 a.m. and noon on the Rowan campus for Haunted New Jersey during Rowan?s annual Homecoming celebration. Visitors can purchase the book and have it signed by co-authors Rowan Geography Professor Dr. Charles A. Stansfield and Rowan graduate and historian Patricia Martinelli from 9-10:30 a.m. in the main atrium of Savitz Hall during a breakfast reception for returning alumni and at an alumni picnic held from noon-2 p.m. at the football field.
Haunted New Jersey (Stackpole Books, $9.95) is a diverse collection of ghost stories spanning the length and breadth of the state, chronicling happenings ranging from the mundane to the outrageous. The book includes classics such as the ?Jersey Devil? and the ?Woman in White,? as well as UFO sightings and shipwreck and seaside hauntings. There?s also a section recounting stories of ghosts roaming the Rowan campus, including the former owner of Hollybush Mansion on Whitney Avenue in Glassboro.
Unlike similar books, Haunted New Jersey is a serious record of historical accounts long shared word-of-mouth. In a recent review, Publisher?s Weekly praises Stansfield and Martinelli?s sober approach, saying the collection ??should appeal to residents of the Garden State interested in local lore as well as American historians.?
The book is a collaboration birthed in the Rowan Geography Department nearly 30 years ago, when as a young professor, Stansfield was seeking a typist and editor for his textbook manuscripts and Martinelli, as a Rowan student, was looking for opportunities to earn extra money for college. Now a historian at Batsto Village, a 200-year-old Pinelands historic site, Martinelli has many times served as typist and editor for Stansfield?s manuscripts about New Jersey and geography. Haunted New Jersey is the first book co-authored by the two friends.
