Two Essex County Residents Honored by Rowan University Dean

Two Rowan University students from Essex County were honored as outstanding graduating seniors by Dr. Jay Harper, dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Harper cited one student from each major in the College during a recognition ceremony in April.

Jasara Rani Calandrella, of Bloomfield, was honored as an outstanding graduating senior in political science. She has volunteered her time working with the mentally handicapped, the homeless and the poor, and she traveled to Brazil to teach English to elementary and secondary school students. While there, she coordinated weekly trips to feed children and homeless teenagers. She is an active member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Farm Sanctuary, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. On campus, she is a part of the Golden Key International Honour Society, Student University Programming, Student Animal Rights Alliance and the National Association for Campus Activities, among other organizations.

Doreek Charles, of Bloomfield, was honored as an outstanding graduating senior in psychology. She will have completed two independent study projects by graduation, has worked as a research assistant, and is described as a student who is ?willing to go the extra mile and open herself up to the true academic experience.? She currently is working at Compassionate Reach Senior Care Services.
