Mukhoti to Attend Oxford ConferenceJanuary 23, 2006
Dr. Bela Mukhoti, professor and chairperson of the Economics Department at Rowan University, has been invited to attend the Oxford Round Table in March at the University of Oxford, England.
Founded in 1989 as an interdisciplinary forum to address important public policy issues from a scholarly perspective, the Round Table invites participants based on their academic expertise and potential to contribute significantly to the gathering?s topic. The spring 2006 session, limited to about 40 people, will focus on women?s rights and the identification of factors that create and perpetuate gender inequality in public and private sectors, with an emphasis on inequality in employment and education in the United States. Alumni of the Round Table include government officials, business leaders, lawyers, physicians, academicians and others, according to the organization.
Mukhoti, of Sewell, earned her Ph.D. in economics from the London School of Economics and an M.A. in economics and B.A. in economics with honors from Calcutta University, India.
Mukhoti has earned numerous awards for her achievements, including a Rhoda Freeman Recognition Award for Contributions to Women's Education from the New Jersey College and University Coalition on Women's Education; a commendation by a chancellor of New Jersey Higher Education and Rowan administrators for economics curriculum enhancement efforts in New Jersey colleges and universities; an Award of Recognition for Significant Contributions to the Integration of the Scholarship in Gender, Race, Class and Ethnicity in New Jersey Academic Institutions from the director of the New Jersey Project of the New Jersey Department of Higher Education; and a Merit Award for outstanding achievements in teaching and research from Rowan University. She was listed in Marquis? Who?s Who in the World Millennium Edition -- 2000-2006, Marquis? Who?s Who of American Women Millennium Edition -- 2000-2006 and Marquis? Who?s Who in America -- 1989-2006.
Currently, she is working on several books: ?Globalization in the 21st Century,? ?Women in the Economy? and ?Lessons from Agrarian Reform in India, 1950-1980.? She has authored numerous books and refereed journal articles and presented extensively at various academic conferences and for community organizations.
Mukhoti is a member of American Friends of the London School of Economics and a founding and life member of The Congress of Political Economists -- International, the Association of Indian Economic Studies and "Sanskriti" -- Bengali Cultural Association.
In addition to being a member of the Rowan faculty, she has worked for the U.S. Government; the University of North Dakota; the University of Northern Iowa; the government of India; Lakehead University, Ontario, Canada; Memphis State University; the University of Kentucky; and Girls' College, Howrah, India.
