Chemical engineering students awarded in AIChE competitions
May 14, 2007Two Rowan University chemical engineering student papers and two student posters received awards during the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference held April 21 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA.
Lisa Scodari, of Raritan, a senior, won first place and $200 in the paper competition with her entry titled "Retrofit of Sour Water Networks in Oil Refineries: A Case Study." Scodari also presented her findings at the conference. She will represent the region (which includes 16 universities) at the National AIChE competition in November.
Sonia Berberena, of Tuckerton, also a senior, received honorable mention and $50 for her paper, "Palladium Removal from Reaction Mixtures by Fixed Bed Adsorption."
In the poster competition, senior Laura Kuczynski, of Sayreville, placed second for her poster "Removal of Soluble Palladium Complexes From Reaction Mixtures using Fixed Bed Adsorption." Juniors Chris Fable, of Freehold, and John Manganaro, of Monroeville, and sophomore Michael Raymond, of Burlington, finished third for their poster, "Catalytic Activity of Co-doped SiO2, TiO2 catalysts for Fischer Tropsch Reactions."
AIChE's Mid-Atlantic region includes student chapters from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, western Virginia and southeastern New York state (including New York City and Long Island). The AIChE is an educational, professional and policy-making organization with 40,000 members in 93 countries, according to its Web site.
