Westby Gallery showcases Schumm's drawings and sculptures

September 13, 2007

Westby Gallery on the campus of Rowan University displays sculptures and drawings by Fred Schumm, an Artist-in-Residence at the university, from September 24 through November 3, 2007. A reception to welcome this exhibit will be Thursday, September 27 from 5 - 7 pm in the gallery.

A resident of New Jersey for the past 20 years, Schumm has continuously exhibited his work in the Philadelphia and New Jersey region. His work combines his love of mathematics and the human form in abstract and figurative compositions using materials as diverse as bronze, stone and wood. This exhibit also includes works on paper that serve as studies, plans and lyrical imaginary musings.

Schumm has a fascinating history. He was born in Colorado and began creating sculptures at the age of 9. He attended the Colorado Springs School of Fine Arts on the G.I. Bill following World War II. He went on to receive a Fulbright Grant to continue his study of sculpture in Italy. Later he was a resident of the renowned MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire. He currently lives in Cherry Hill, NJ.

Westby Gallery is located in Westby Hall. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 am to 5 pm; and Saturday, 12 to 4 pm. For more information, call 856-256-4521 or visit www.rowan.edu/westbygallery
