Mayes Duo performs on classical, renaissance guitar and lute
March 13, 2008The Mayes Guitar Duo, featuring Joseph and Kathleen Mayes, performs as part of the Rowan University College of Fine & Performing Arts Faculty Concert Spotlight Series on Wednesday, March 26, 2008. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Boyd Recital Hall.
The varied program features music for Renaissance lutes and guitars and 19th and 20th century classical guitars. The duo’s performance includes Alessandro Piccinini’s Toccata a dui liuti, Fernando Carulli’s Duo Concertant, Op. 328, Howard Vance’s Shenandoah, Milan Tesar’s Suita Karussel, Alfredo Viana’s Pretencioso and Ernesto Lecouna’s …Y La Negra Bailaba, among others.
The Mayes Guitar Duo has released two self-produced CDs in recent years: The School of Musicke and, more recently, Sketches For Two: Music for Two Guitars ~ Music for Two Lutes. As a duo, their work demonstrates versatility with an array of music styles played on various instruments including the classical guitar, terz guitar, 19th century guitar, Renaissance lute, archlute and the Neapolitan mandolin. Both have gained much experience through their solo careers and playing with respected ensembles.
Joseph Mayes heads the Guitar and Early Music programs at Rowan. Published in both periodicals and music publishing houses, he is well-known for his performances as well as his guitar knowledge. With degrees from Thomas Edison College and Shenandoah University, he has studied with notable guitarists including Andres Segovia, Carlos Barbosa-Lima and Jose Tomas. Mayes has performed throughout the United States and Europe and has recorded four solo CDs of both guitar and lute music.
Kathleen Mayes is an adjunct professor of classical guitar and music history at both Rowan University and Burlington County College. She holds degrees from Rowan University and Drexel University. She also studied with well-known Segovia disciple Larry Snitzler of George Mason University and Julian Gray of Peabody Conservatory.
