Rowan Engineers Without Borders receives grants

March 19, 2008

The Rowan chapter of Engineers Without Borders-USATM (EWBTM) recently received two separate grants.

The Richard and Rhonda Goldman Fund awarded the group $5,000 for its current project in La Ceiba, El Salvador. Members of Rowan EWBTM will travel to La Ceiba this month for an assessment trip. The eventual goal is to provide the town with clean, easily accessible drinking water. A family foundation established in 1951, the Goldman Fund seeks to aid projects that address serious issues using innovative approaches.

The Philadelphia Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) awarded $500 to Rowan EWBTM. ASME is a professional organization concerned with technical, educational and research issues involved in engineering, according to the organization.

EWB-USATM is a non-profit organization committed to designing and implementing engineering projects in developing communities around the world. Such projects include renewable energy, clean water supplies and sustainable enterprise development. The organization's volunteers also include individuals with backgrounds in business, journalism, health and education, according to the organization.

Rowan's EWBTM chapter currently is working on another project with a community in Senegal, West Africa, in an effort to provide it with clean drinking water. The group hopes to travel to this village in the summer. Past Rowan EWBTM projects have included developing a potable-water distribution system in the Honduran community of Mataderos and installing a water distribution system in Pateung, Thailand.
