Concert Band Pops Concert highlights student conductors
April 29, 2008The Rowan Concert Band, under the direction of John Pastin, highlights the work of student conductors for its annual Pops Concert on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at 8 pm in Pfleeger Concert Hall.
Rowan students Matthew Gianotti, Megan Heber, Chris Chapman, Jonathan Hunt, Phil Hamilton and Ken Schultz are featured conductors for various selections during the concert. The program includes Robert Russell Bennett’s Suite of Old American Dances, George Gershwin’s An American in Paris, Malcolm Arnold’s Tam O’Shanter, Michale Kamen’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Aaron Copland’s An Outdoor Overture, James Curnow’s Where Never A Lark or Eagle Flew and Leroy Anderson’s Trumpeters Lullaby and Buglers Holiday. The two Anderson pieces feature student trumpet soloists Danielle Horan, Pagean Sanders and Carla DeStefano
The University Concert Band is comprised of music majors, music minors, non-music majors from across our campus, high school students and community members. The ensemble performs two concerts during the academic year and augments the university Wind Ensemble for the university’s Commencement ceremonies. Students utilize the Concert Band to practice their conducting skills while members study the repertoire that exists for large band ensembles and pops programs.
Pastin, Lieutenant Commander and Conductor, US Navy Band (Retired), is a member of the Rowan music faculty and Director of Bands. He came to the university in 1998 after a 30-year career in the United States Navy’s music program. In addition to touring the world with various Navy bands, he served as Conductor and Officer in Charge for the U.S. Navy Band from 1995-1998. He earned numerous awards and commendations for his service and musicianship, including the Legion of Merit presented by then-President Clinton.
Pfleeger Concert Hall is located in Wilson Hall on the campus of Rowan University, Route 322 in Glassboro. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors.
