Rowan engineering student awarded honor society scholarship

April 29, 2008

The Tau Beta Pi Association recently awarded Michael Golias, 20, a Rowan University junior studying civil and environmental engineering, a $2,000 scholarship.

Tau Beta Pi is an engineering society representing the entire profession. The nation's second oldest honor society, Tau Beta Pi began at Lehigh University in 1885. The society consists of 234 colleges and universities in the U.S. with chapters, 16 distrcits across the country with active alumnus chapters and 498,356 individual members, according to the organization.

Golias, of Milltown, recently was elected as the president of the Rowan chapter of Tau Beta Pi. The honor society most recently involved itself in the Rowan "RU Green" program-a university-wide effort aimed at encouraging and integrating efforts toward a more environmentally conscious campus.

"The Rowan chapter of Tau Beta Pi participated in the Recycling Blitz, where we delivered recycling cans to various locations around campus," Golias said. "This semester we helped to conduct a recycling bin survey of the academic buildings on campus. This involved members of the Rowan chapter recording all the rooms on campus that do not have bins to ensure they receive them."
