The annual award, presented at the spring meeting of the section, consists of a $250 honorarium, a certificate of recognition and registration for the meeting at which the presentation is made.

The ASEE Mid-Atlantic Section is committed to excellence in the instruction of engineering and engineering technology students and annually recognizes an outstanding engineering or engineering technology teacher from the section, according to the organization.

Candidates for the award, according to ASEE, must be members of the Mid-Atlantic Section who teach any subject included in an accredited engineering or engineering technology curriculum that leads to an engineering or engineering technology degree, should have a broad and accurate knowledge of their field and should challenge their students, among other qualifications.

Mehta, of Washington Township, joined the Rowan faculty in 2001. Prior to that, he was a research associate at the University of Florida. Mehta received his Ph.D. in civil engineering from The Pennsylvania State University and his M.S. in civil engineering from The Oklahoma University. He is a registered professional engineer in New Jersey.
