Rowan to welcome freshmen, parents during orientation

June 05, 2008

Are you ready for Rowan? By the end of June, all members of the incoming Class of 2012--and their parents--should be able to answer that question with a definitive "yes."

That's the intention of the RU Ready for Rowan Summer Orientation Program, which will be held June 18-19, 23-24 and 25-26 on the University's Glassboro campus.

Altogether, the University will welcome 1,200 freshmen and more than 1,600 parents across three separate orientation sessions, according to Joanne Damminger, executive assistant to Rowan's vice president of student affairs.

"The program is designed to welcome students and parents and to strengthen what it means to be successful academically," says Damminger.

During orientation, students and their parents will attend separate sessions.

Student sessions will include information on academic success, scheduling, academic advising and student activities, while workshops will focus on time management, study skills, academic honesty, embracing diversity and making healthy choices, among others.

Parent sessions will include presentations on student services, academics and adjusting to college life, as well as small-group and informal discussions with faculty, administrators and fellow parents.

Students and parents will both meet with the PROS (Peer Referral and Orientation Staff), 50 upper-class Rowan students who are specially trained to assist students with personal, social and academic concerns.

"Generally, the PROS interact with students during orientation to assist, acclimate, befriend and support students as they adjust to the campus," Damminger says.
