Girls invited to AWE-some engineering program at Rowan

June 05, 2008

Limited spaces still are available for middle school-aged girls to attend the Rowan University College of Engineering's 10th annual Attracting Women Into Engineering (AWE) program on Tuesday, July 22, or Wednesday, July 23, on the University's Glassboro campus.

This year, Rowan is holding two one-day workshops designed to introduce girls entering seventh and eighth grades to the field of engineering.  Participants in the highly competitive workshops will interact with faculty members and undergraduate engineering students via hands-on experiments in the various fields of engineering, including sessions on bridges, bottle rockets, water treatment, circuits and lip gloss.

The goal of AWE is to provide teenage girls with opportunities to explore multiple engineering disciplines while reinforcing the need for them to stay focused on their science and math studies.

The program accepts 50 students for each session, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rowan Hall, the engineering building. There is a $25 non-refundable workshop fee for participants; lunch will be provided.

Deadline for applications is June 20. Visit www.rowan.edu/awe or call Kathy Urbano at (856) 256-5309 for more information.
