Rowan hosts engineering workshops for high school students

June 24, 2008

Forty high school students from Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth and Union counties in New Jersey and from schools in Pennsylvania and Connecticut have registered for Rowan University's Introduction for Students to Engineering (RISE), the College of Engineering's program for students curious about a future as an engineer.

Held from Tuesday, July 8 through Thursday, July 10, the workshop will offer students an opportunity to learn about engineering through hands-on activities, from exploring fundamentals of electrical engineering while building an iPod speaker out of an Altoid box to learning some chemical engineering basics by coating cookies in chocolate, from learning about civil engineering while working with Jenga blocks to tackling mechanical engineering principles while building and launching bottle rockets.

The workshop will feature laboratory clinics, campus tours and a chance to meet College of Engineering professors and students. A field trip to an industrial site will also be part of the experience.

The competitive program is just one of Rowan's many offerings for K-12 students and educators. For more information or RISE and Rowan's other outreach offerings, visit www.rowan.edu/engineering or call 856-256-5300.
