Rowan hosts engineering workshop for South Jersey teachers and students
May 19, 2009K-12 educators and high school seniors throughout the South Jersey area are invited to participate in hands-on workshops and clinics during the four-day Engineering Clinics for Teachers (ECT) program at Rowan University from Sunday, July 12, to Thursday, July 16.
Modeled after Rowan engineering clinics, the program is designed to allow teachers to work with engineering faculty on experiments that can be duplicated in K-12 classrooms. In addition, participants will take a trip to the Atlantic County Utility Authority (ACUA) in Egg Harbor Township to learn about wastewater treatment as well as visit the ACUA’s wind and solar farm, landfill and biogas facility.
Originally, the program was only open to teachers, but this year high school seniors who are considering a future in engineering or teaching technology are welcome.
“This workshop provides exposure to engineering careers and makes engineering more relevant to educators,” said Dr. Kauser Jahan, professor and chairperson of the Civil and Environmental Engineering program at Rowan and director of the ECT program. “The workshop ensures that teachers are prepared to successfully integrate engineering content into their existing curriculum.”
Teachers are provided with stipends and continuing education units, and housing is available if needed. A certificate will be awarded upon completion of ECT.
