Rowan business student receives honor society scholarship

International honor society Beta Gamma Sigma has named Rowan University Rohrer College of Business rising senior Alex Wanschura, of Hamilton Square and Glassboro, as winner of a $1,000 Beta Gamma Sigma Scholarship.

In its 96th year dedicated to recognizing excellence in the study and practice of business, Beta Gamma Sigma presented the award to Wanschura for his superior performance in the study of business and to continue his education in 2009-10. Wanschura is majoring in accounting and has a 3.98 GPA as of spring 2009. Wanschura, who plans to become an actuary, has worked as an office assistant/archivist for McGuire Air Force Base, a peer tutor at Rowan and an accounting assistant for MTB Associates in Ocean Grove.

Among his many activities at Rowan, in addition to being a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society, Wanschura is a member of the Bureau of Business Associations, representing the Rowan University Accounting Society; a producer for Rowan Television Network; a member of the Thomas N. Bantivoglio Honors Concentration; and a song leader for Grace and Peace Chapel in Burlington. In 2009, he also participated in Rowan’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, which helped students and low-income residents from the region prepare their income taxes. He has volunteered with Rowan’s Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship and Alpha Phi Omega, a service-oriented fraternity.

He has been the recipient of several scholarships for academic achievement: the Edward J. Bloustein Scholarship, Wiss Edward W. O’Connell Memorial Scholarship, William G. Rohrer Scholarship and Leo C. Beebe Scholarship.

Since 1988, according to the organization, Beta Gamma Sigma and its member deans have awarded more than $1.4 million in scholarships to outstanding student members from around the world. The Society is proud that its contributions have helped “the best in business” reach their academic and professional goals.

Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in a bachelor’s or master’s program at a school accredited by AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the organization noted. To be eligible for membership, the academic ranking of those being considered must place them in the upper 10 percent of their junior or senior class or upper 20 percent of the graduating master’s class. Members inducted each year join an expanding worldwide network of more than 580,000 business professionals.
