Rowan Radio shows win awards from SPJ, Philadelphia Press Association

June 04, 2009

Rowan Radio has picked up two first-place awards in competitions sponsored by the New Jersey chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the Philadelphia Press Association.

"Studio 89.7," a monthly show on Rowan Radio, won the first-place award in the radio enterprise reporting category of the 2009 SPJ competition. The show is hosted by veteran Philadelphia radio newscaster and Rowan adjunct faculty member Paul Perrello.

Now in its third year on Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM, "Studio 89.7" features interviews with authors, celebrities and newsmakers. The winning show featured Perrello's interview with attorney-turned actor Hill Harper, author of the inspirational book, Letters to a Young Sister. The book targets African-American males, stressing the value of a good education over accumulating material possessions, and the importance of becoming "the architect of your own life."

Perrello will accept the award June 28 at the NJSPJ Award Luncheon in New Brunswick. A list of winners can be found at http://www.njspj.org/.

In the Philadelphia Press Association's annual competition, Rowan Radio's weekly show, "The Women's Room," won first place for Best Radio Magazine Feature.

The winning show focused on post-partum depression, which included commentary by expert guests Susan Ellis Murphy, Coordinator of Post-Partum Depression (PPD) Services in South Jersey, and Kean University Associate Professor Connie Bonillas, who survived PPD.

Hosted by Cedarville's Julia Giacoboni, who earned her bachelor's degree in radio/television/film from Rowan in May, the program competed against professional radio programs to win first place. "The Women's Room" airs every Thursday.

The award will be presented June 26 at the Philadelphia Press Association Awards Dinner in Philadelphia. A list of winners can be found at http://www.phillyppa.com/2009winners.html .
