H.S students learn engineering basics in Rowan Engineering’s summer program
July 02, 2009More than 40 high school students from New Jersey and Delaware will gain hands-on engineering experience in Rowan University's Introduction for Students to Engineering (RISE), the College of Engineering's program for students exploring a future as an engineer, from Tuesday, July 7, through Thursday, July 9, generally from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, in Rowan Hall, the College of Engineering building at Rowan University, off Bowe Boulevard in Glassboro, N.J., and off campus.
RISE will teach students about engineering through hands-on activities, from exploring fundamentals of electrical engineering while building an iPod speaker out of an Altoid box to learning some chemical engineering basics by coating cookies in chocolate, from learning about civil engineering while working with Jenga blocks to tackling mechanical engineering principles while building and launching bottle rockets.
The workshop will feature laboratory clinics, campus tours and a chance to meet College of Engineering professors and students. A field trip to industrial sites and businesses also will be part of the experience. Participants are coming from public and private schools in Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties; Shore areas; and Central and North Jersey as well as Bear, De.
