Hispanic Studies scholar to speak at Rowan
September 21, 2009Hispanic and Hispanic-American Studies scholar Enrique Sacerio-Gari will present the keynote address as part of Rowan University's observance of Hispanic Heritage Awareness Month on Friday, Sept. 25.
A Cuban immigrant who advocates reconciliation between his homeland and the United States, Sacerio-Gari is the Dorothy Nepper Marshall Professor of Hispanic and Hispanic-American Studies at Bryn Mawr College, where he has taught since 1977. His talk to the Rowan community begins at 1 p.m. in the Eynon Ballroom of the Chamberlain Student Center.
Admission is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by Rowan's Office of Multicultural Affairs.
Known for his work on Jorge Luis Borges and for his poetry, Sacerio-Gari's poetic works include: Comunion (a concrete poem) and Poemas interreales. He has written on Rosario Castellanos, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jose Lezama Lima, Brazilian concrete poetry and Cuban detective fiction.
A contributing editor to the Handbook of Latin American Studies, published by the Library of Congress, Sacerio-Gari led a fact-finding Peace Studies mission to Nicaragua and Costa Rica in 1985. In 1997, he taught a tri-college Peace Studies seminar, which included trips to Washington, Miami and Cuba.
