Greenspan recital shares melodic range of violin
October 23, 2009Violinist Bertram Greenspan explores “melody” in his recital on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 5 pm, part of the Faculty Spotlight Series presented by the Rowan University College of Fine & Performing Arts. The performance is in Boyd Recital Hall on the Glassboro campus.
Accompanied by pianist Elise Auerbach, Greenspan presents a program addressing the different ideas of melody before and after 1900. The first half features Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne, written shortly after World War I, and Hindemith’s Sonata for Violin and Piano from 1939, as the composer fled persecution during Hitler’s advance into Eastern Europe. The second half showcases the impressionistic Poeme for Violin and Orchestra by Chausson and Schumann’s romanticism in the Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Minor, Op. 105.
A noted violinist and conductor, Greenspan received his early training in Chicago and subsequently studied at the Julliard School of Music. He earned his Masters of Music and Doctor of Music degrees at Indiana University in Bloomington. Among his honors are the Gold Medal and Diplome d'Honneur from the Foundation Eugene Ysaye of Brussels, Belgium. He has performed at Carnegie Hall and New York’s Town Hall, in addition to serving as concertmaster of the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra Society of Philadelphia and the Reading Symphony Orchestra. As a performer, he has appeared with the Philadelphia Opera Company, Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra and Philly Pops. He was master teacher of violin for the American String Teachers Summer Conference in New Jersey for 40 years. He has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award of the American String Teachers Association - NJ Chapter and the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award at Rowan University.
