Bay Atlantic Symphony offers a 'Night at the Opera'
November 04, 2009Beginning a new performance series as ensemble-in-residence at Rowan University, the Bay Atlantic Symphony celebrates with A Night at the Opera on Friday, November 6 at 8 pm in the university’s Pfleeger Concert Hall.
Under the direction of conductor Jed Gaylin, this season-opening performance presents symphonic works that embody the spirit of Italian Opera. Starting with Gioacchino Rossini’s Overture to The Barber of Seville, the program continues with Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 “Italian” and the second performance ever of Gaetano Panariello’s Triple Concerto (Homage to Opera Buffa). The concerto, featuring the Poulenc Trio, which commissioned the piece, recalls the wit, humor and melody of the operatic genre.
Upcoming concerts in the Rowan series are January 29 (“Rediscovering America” with Copland’s Appalachian Spring), March 5 (“Disguised as a Child” with works by Barber, Bizet and Mahler) and April 24 (“Retro and Barbaric” with works by Brahms and Revueltas). All concerts are 8 pm.
Bay-Atlantic Symphony is a professional orchestra that offers symphonic and chamber music concerts and sponsors educational experiences for student, adult and special populations throughout southern New Jersey. This region-wide outreach is unique among orchestras the size of BAS, exhibiting the Symphony’s mission of exposing the citizens of southern New Jersey to the beauty and power of classical music through live performance and education.
Praised throughout the US, Europe and Asia for his insight, precision, phrasing and conviction, Gaylin has been Music Director of the Bay-Atlantic Symphony since 1997. He is also principal conductor of the Cape May Music Festival and has served since 1993 as Music Director of the Johns Hopkins Symphony Orchestra in Baltimore. In 2007 he was named Principal Guest Conductor of the National Film and Radio Philharmonic in Beijing, China. Gaylin has a close association with Baltimore's Opera Vivente, where he conducts annually.
Thanks to a generous grant from PNC Arts Alive, tickets for all BAS concerts are $25. Admission for Rowan students is free with valid ID. Pfleeger Concert Hall is located in Wilson Hall on the campus of Rowan University, Route 322 in Glassboro.
