WGLS-FM sports programs win regional, national awards
November 06, 2009Sports programs by Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM recently picked up two big awards at the Philadelphia College Achievement in Radio (AIR) Awards and another top honor at the national College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) competition.
In the Philadelphia College AIR Awards, recently named the Dr. Craig Monroe College AIR Awards in tribute to the late dean of Rowan's College of Communication, junior E.J. Campbell won first place for "Best College Sports Reporting" for "Rowan Sports Minute." The segment focused on the death of Philadelphia Phillies Hall-of-Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas.
Additionally, Campbell won first-place for "Best College Radio Editorial" for another report on the Phillies' post-season.
Presented by the March of Dimes, the AIR Awards honor the best in Philadelphia-area radio.
Campbell, a Radio/Television/Film (RTF) major from South Amboy, also was named a national finalist for the "Rowan Sports Minute" segment in the CBI competition.
Rowan Radio brought home the top prize in the "Best Documentary" category of the CBI Awards as "From First Snap to Stagg: The History of Rowan Football" won its second national award.
Produced by 2008 RTF alumni Joe Staudenmayer and Jim Vassallo, the program previously won first place in the 2008 Mark of Excellence national competition sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists.
Staudenmayer, who also earned his master's degree in public relations from Rowan in May, is a resident of Pennsauken. Vassallo lives in Marlton.
The CBI Award was presented at the 88th annual National College Media Convention at the University of Texas at Austin.
Housed in the University's College of Communication, Rowan Radio WGLS-FM has won 172 national and regional awards since 1993.
