Rowan Opera performs 'Suor Angelica' and other selections in an evening of classic works
November 13, 2009Puccini’s Suor Angelica is paired with selections from other classic works for a musical evening presented by the Rowan Opera Company on November 20 and 21, 2009 at 8 pm in Pfleeger Concert Hall.
Under the direction of Marian Stieber and Jon Garrison, the company begins the program with scenes from Verdi’s La Forza del Destino and Nabucco; Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, Menotti’s The Consul; and Puccini’s La Boheme. The second act features a fully-staged production of Giacomo Puccini’s Suor Angelica. The Rowan Opera Orchestra, conducted by Salvatore Scarpa, accompanies the performance.
Suor Angelica is set in an Italian convent in the late 1600s and shares the story of the somewhat mysterious Sister Angelica, who lives contentedly with the other nuns until family issues and tragedy lead her to some desperate choices. Despite this, Puccini’s opera is ultimately about faith, forgiveness and redemption.
In addition to her work as a director and educator at Rowan, Stieber is a highly regarded performer in the Philadelphia area. Well-known for her stylistic skills as a vocalist, she has distinguished herself in both opera and on the concert stage. Stieber has received recognition from the Metropolitan Opera and Luciano Pavarotti vocal competitions. As a member of the voice faculty in Rowan’s Department of Music, Stieber has performed in the Faculty Spotlight Series and as a guest soloist with several Rowan music ensembles.
Garrison, renowned for his interpretations of 20th and 21st century music, has sung 21 roles in more than 200 performances with New York’s Metropolitan Opera. He has appeared with numerous other companies throughout the country, including those in Washington, Houston and Miami. Additionally, he has performed with major symphony orchestras in the United States, Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia and the Far East.
Pfleeger Concert Hall is located in Wilson Hall on the Rowan campus, Route 322 in Glassboro, NJ. Tickets for the evening performances are $10, general admission; and $5 for seniors, non-Rowan students, Rowan staff and alumni. Rowan students are admitted free with valid ID.
