Bay Atlantic Symphony explores 'String Theory' in Rowan concert
February 24, 2010Bay Atlantic Symphony explores an evening of String Theory and welcomes violinist Stefan Jackiw for the next concert in its performance series at Rowan University, Friday, March 5, 2010 at 8 pm in the university’s Pfleeger Concert Hall.
Led by musical director Jed Gaylin, the concert features Jackiw performing Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 in D Major. The program also includes Gershwin's Lullaby in an arrangement by Gaylin, Holst's St. Paul's Suite and Tchaikovsky's Andante Cantabile.
Jackiw is recognized as one of his generation’s most significant artists, hailed for his technique and playing that combines poetry and purity. In addition to many international engagements, he has performed throughout the United States with the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and the orchestras of Baltimore, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Nashville, Oregon, Rochester, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Luke’s (NY) and Utah, among many other ensembles. Born in 1985 to parents of Korean and German descent, Jackiw began playing the violin at the age of four. His teachers have included Zinaida Gilels, Michèle Auclair and Donald Weilerstein. Jackiw holds a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University, as well as an Artist Diploma from the New England Conservatory. In 2002, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant.
The final concert in the 2009-2010 Rowan series is April 24 at 8 pm (“Retro and Barbaric” with works by Brahms and Revueltas).
Bay-Atlantic Symphony, ensemble-in-residence at Rowan, is a professional orchestra that offers symphonic and chamber music concerts and sponsors educational experiences for student, adult and special populations throughout southern New Jersey. Thanks to a generous grant from PNC Arts Alive, tickets for all BAS concerts are $25. Admission for Rowan students is free with valid ID.
