'When the Child Cries': Rowan to present play by alumnus in celebration of Women's History MonthMarch 03, 2010
"When the Child Cries," an intense social commentary on the struggles of a young mother, written by Rowan University alumnus Leroy Harris, will be presented on March 19 and 20 at 7 p.m. in Rowan's Pfleeger Concert Hall as part of the University's observance of Women's History Month.
Tickets are $25 and proceeds will benefit the Salvation Army, Volunteers of America, Boys and Girls Club of Gloucester County, local churches and food banks.
A 1974 alumnus of Rowan's College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Harris is an award-winning producer, director, promoter, actor, and entrepreneur. In 1980, he founded L. Arnold Productions. Four years later, he staged and toured "When the Child Cries" for the first time.
"I came from meager beginnings. I witnessed how hard it was for a single mother to provide for her family with honor and dignity," said Harris about his inspiration for the play.
"My mission today is to give back all that I can, using my resources and talent to help those who are trying to help themselves. I wish to empower them to keep moving toward the light at the end of their tunnel--no matter how great the vision."
