Henry M. Rowan Speaker Series addresses manufacturing processes

March 25, 2010

Continuing the Henry M. Rowan Speaker Series, Rowan’s College of Engineering hosts a discussion with Thomas J. Blacklock, Ph.D. on Tuesday, April 6, at 1:45 p.m. in the Betty Long Lecture Hall in Rowan Hall.

Blacklock’s discussion, "Why Do We Need Good Manufacturing Practices?,"  chronicles 75 years up to establishing the Food and Drug Administration and creation of regulations still changing today.  The lecture addresses ethics and emphasizes that a simple "Who would know?" or "What harm could this do?" can have serious consequences.  The presentation closes by discussing copycat drugs, substandard generics, counterfeits and what the industry must do to protect its name and products.

With more than 30 years experience in pharmaceuticals to his current role heading Early Portfolio Acceleration at Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. in East Hanover, Blacklock has worked on industrial processes for high blood pressure and glaucoma medications.

The presentation is part of the ongoing Henry M. Rowan Speaker Series, sponsored by the College of Engineering and the Dean's Advisory Council. Top professionals in their fields are brought to campus to discuss relevant topics of interest to students, engineers and the general public. The presentation is free and open to the public.
