Some spaces still available in summer engineering workshop for middle school girls

Rowan University has limited openings on June 30 and July 1 for middle school-aged girls in its Attracting Women into Engineering (AWE) program, designed to expose them to the broad field of engineering. The sessions run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rowan Hall on the Glassboro campus. The June 29 session is full.

Females entering the 7^th and 8^th grades in Fall 2010 may participate in either of the three, one-day sessions, during which they may work with and learn from College of Engineering faculty and students. The workshops will focus on hands-on engineering laboratory experiments, professionalism, gender sensitivity and computer training. Participants will explore engineering fundamentals while enjoying such projects as making lip-gloss and building and launching water bottle rockets.

The non-refundable workshop fee is $25 for one day, and a pizza lunch will be provided.

This is the 11^th year Rowan will offer the AWE workshops, in part to help stem the decline in middle school females’ self-esteem as they enter adolescence and combat the trend of gender inequality, starting in the classroom.

Many Rowan AWE participants have pursued engineering and several have attended Rowan’s College of Engineering, crediting their initial interest in engineering to the AWE program.
