Law & Justice Day set for Oct. 26 at RowanOctober 24, 2011
Law enforcement will take center stage on Rowan University's campus on Wednesday, Oct. 26, during the second annual Law & Justice Day.
Presented by Alpha Pi Sigma, the Law & Justice Studies honor society, and Rowan's Department of Public Safety, the day runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the intramural field and in Parking Lot W.
"Law & Justice Day isn't just for Law & Justice majors. It's open to the entire Rowan community and the Glassboro community," says Amy LoSacco, a criminal justice graduate student and president of Alpha Pi Sigma.
An opening ceremony at 9 a.m. will feature the singing of the national anthem by Rowan student Rajeer Alford. U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Christian Bolf, who earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from Rowan in 1995, will give the keynote address.
Bolf's talk will be followed by a dedication ceremony honoring Vineland K-9 Officer Clif, who was killed in the line of duty on Oct. 10. His handler, Vineland Sgt. William Bontcue, a 1992 Rowan alumnus, will attend the dedication. The ceremony will include a demonstration by K-9 units from Rowan and the Glassboro Police Department.
At 11 a.m., the Gloucester County SWAT team will do a presentation, while, at noon, the New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad will do a demonstration.
The event culminates at 1 p.m., when Crash Investigation Analysis, LLC will stage a vehicular manslaughter reenactment/investigation. The investigation, which will involve a pedestrian "dummy" getting hit by a vehicle, will be a terrific culmination to the day, LoSacco says.
"They'll show how they collect data. They have lasers and dusting powder to check for prints on the car. And they'll use a white board to show the specific equations they use to figure out the angles of impact," LoSacco says.
The event is designed, in part to showcase the various careers available to Law & Justice majors, LoSacco says.
"Normally, when you think of Law & Justice majors, you think they'll become police officers or lawyers. Law & Justice Day will demonstrate the many different directions the major can take," she says.
