Engineers tackle bridge buildingSeptember 27, 2013
The Rowan University chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will host a DROPPED competition, during which students will build bridges on Friday, Sept. 27, from 5:30 to 9:45 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center’s Esby Pool.
The catch? The bridges will be made of cardboard. Teams of five engineering students will build their bridges with 10 sheets of cardboard using one roll of duct tape, a tape measure and two box cutters. With these supplies, the students are required to complete the project within three hours.
The competition will take place over the Rec Center’s Ebsy Pool, where spectators can watch any unsuccessful bridges “fall into the pool and make a big splash,” according to DROPPED coordinator Eric Seckinger.
Judges will award the winners with a DROPPED Champion Rowan Engineering T-shirt and $100.
The competition is a fun event that teaches the fundamentals of engineering to students of all engineering disciplines, backgrounds and class levels.
