Trustees approve bachelor's degree in Africana Studies

February 14, 2008

Rowan's Board of Trustees approved a new major in Africana Studies during its meeting on Wednesday.

Upon approving the bachelor of arts degree, board members moved to forward the program to the Academic Issues Committee of the New Jersey Presidents' Council for review and approval.

The degree, which will provide students with an interdisciplinary examination of the historical and contemporary experiences of people of African descent, will be the only undergraduate major in Africana Studies in Southern New Jersey.

The degree requires a minimum of 120 undergraduate course credit hours, including 39 in the major, 60 in general education and 21 in free electives.
