XP Instructions
Before
you Begin
Enabling
802.1x authentication in Windows XP for the Rowan Wireless
Network is a process you will only need to complete once.
Windows XP ships with a built-in 802.1x client that is accessible
from the Network Properties dialogs. Before beginning this
setup, please visit Windows
Update and make sure your machine is fully up-to-date
with all service packs and patches. You MUST be running Windows
XP Service Pack 2.
Step
by Step Instructions
The
first step in setting up your wireless card for 802.1x is
to open up your Network Connections window.
You can find this by going to the Start menu, selecting the
"Connect To" item, then selecting
"Show all connections" from the
submenu.

Once
you have selected "Show all connections",
you should see a window similar to the one below:

Double-Click the Wireless Network Connection
icon.

From
here, click on the "Wireless Networks"
tab to continue.
PLEASE
NOTE: If you do not have a "Wireless Networks"
tab in your Properties box, it is possible that the setup
software for your wireless card has disabled the Wireless
Zero Config service. To
re-enable this service, follow the instructions here.
In
this window, make sure the "Use Windows to configure
my wireless network settings" option is checked.
This allows Windows to choose the wireless network to connect
to as well as perform the 802.1x authentication.
You
should see "RowanWPA" listed in
the "Available networks" box, as
seen above. If you are not in range of a wireless access
point you can click Add and enter "RowanWPA" manually.
Select
RowanWPA and then click Properties
Make
sure that Network Authentication is set to
WPA and Data encryption
is set to TKIP
Click
the Authentication Tab
Select
Protected EAP (PEAP) from the EAP type drop-down
box.
Uncheck
"Authenticate as computer..." and then
click Properties

In
the Select Authentication Method drop-down box make sure that
"Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)"
is selected.
Click
Configure

Uncheck
"Automatically use my Windows..."
Click
OK and Close until all windows are closed.
At
the bottom of the screen you should get a pop-up balloon that
says "Click here to select a certificate...",
click on the balloon.
You
should then see a box asking for User name, Password and Logon
Domain.

Enter
your Rowan Network username and password. Leave the Logon
domain blank.
Click
OK and Windows will log you into the new RowanWPA network.
You
should next see a Balloon on your task bar reading "Click
here to process your login information..."

Click
the Balloon and you will then see the "Validate
Server Certificate" window:

Click
"OK"
Once
you have logged in successfully, your "Wireless Network

MAC
OSX 10.3 or later
Before
you Begin
Starting
with version 10.3 (Panther), MacOS X includes an 802.1x authentication
client in the Internet Connect applet.
At
this time, the 802.1x client in the Internet Connect applet
is only known to work with Apple Airport cards. If you are
using a non-Airport card in your Mac, you may be unable to
use the built in 802.1x client.
Step
by Step Instructions
To
begin setting up your 802.1x connection, click on the Airport
item on your menu bar and choose "Open Internet
Connect..." as shown below.

In the Internet Connect window that pops up, click on the
802.1X padlock icon at the top. If you do not have the 802.1X
padlock icon like the one shown below, you can create the
802.1x option by clicking on the File menu and choosing "Create
New 802.1X Connection..."
Once
you are at the 802.1x configuration screen, click on the "Configuration"
drop-down box and choose "Edit Configurations..."
as shown below.

In the configuration window, several items will need to be
set. First, change the Description field from "802.1X
Configuration" to "RowanWPA"
so as to denote it as the connection for the secure Rowan
network.
Next,
make sure the Network Port is set to "Airport".
In the "User Name" field, enter your Rowan network
username and enter your password in the "Password"
field. In the "Wireless Network" field, choose "RowanWPA"
from the available selections.
Finally,
in the "Authentication" section,
uncheck all options EXCEPT for PEAP. Click
OK to save the configuration profile.
Once
you are back at the Internet Connect window, your new RowanWPA
profile should be selected. To connect to the network, simply
click the "Connect" button.
The first time you connect to the RowanWPA 802.1x network,
you will be presented with a window asking you to confirm
the identity of the network.
Click "Accept All" (or check Accept and click Continue
depending on the version of OSX you are using). Once you have
done this, the 802.1x client will always validate the identity
of the network when connecting.
Once you have successfully authenticated, the Internet Connect
window will show a Success message at the bottom along with
the amount of time you have been connected.

Pocket
PC
The
Pocket PC platform uses Microsoft's PEAP standard to connect
to Rowan Wireless. Start by inserting your wireless card and
making sure that it activated. Some Pocket PC models may have
a wireless card built in, in this case, make sure the card
is activated.
Please
note, we have noticed that these directions may vary depending
on the make and model of your PDA. If you have difficulty,
please contact the Support
Desk. In many cases, we may ask you to stop by the workshop
with your handheld in order for us to help you configure it
properly.
At the top of the screen you should see the following icon.
This indicates that your Pocket PC does not have a network
connection. Tap this icon.

When
you tap the broken arrows, a dialogue box will appear. Tap
the Settings link.
Tap the Advanced tab and then tap the Network Card button.
Tap the Wireless tab and tap RowanWPA (You must be in the
range of a wireless access point).
As shown in the screen shot below, make sure the following
boxes are checked: Data encryption (WEP Enabled), The key
is provided for me automatically, and Enable network access
using IEEE 802.1X. Make sure PEAP is selected in the EAP type
drop-down list.

In some cases, this section may look different depending on
the model of your wireless card or PDA. The tabs below may
be separated into General, Network Key, and 802.1x. If this
is the case, the Network Key tab will have the same information
and options as the Authentication tab above, except that the
options relating to PEAP will have been moved to the 802.1x
tab. Tap on the 802.1x tab and make sure Use IEEE 802.1x network
access control is checked and that PEAP is selected in the
menu as shown below.
Tap OK in the upper right corner of the screen. A screen should
appear prompting you to enter your login information. Enter
your Rowan network Username and Password. Leave the Domain
field blank. Tap OK when finished.
Once
you have entered your password, the broken arrows should change
to the following icon:
Once these arrows appear, launch your web browser and test
the connection by loading your favorite web page.
Once
connected you can surf the web, send and receive e-mail, and
synchronize with the exchange server.
