Terminology You Should Know Before Getting Started
In order for Web Services to better serve you, we
need to make sure we're all speaking the same language. The following is
a list of terms that are most commonly used by the Web Services Team and
those requesting our assistance. If there's a term that you think should
be listed here and is not, please let us know by emailing webservices@rowan.edu!
- The Rowan University
Web
is anything that relates to the online presence (accessible on and off campus)
of the University. The Rowan Web, whose main address is http://www.rowan.edu lives
on the Rowan University Network and consists of hundreds of thousands of
files (i.e. .html files, image files such as .jpegs and .gifs, flash files,
.cfm files, pdf's and the list goes on). All official Rowan
University websites live within the web, which physically resides on the
Rowan University Network.
- The Rowan
University Network
is a group of two or more computer systems linked together. There are many
types of computer networks, but the one that Rowan uses is called a local area
network (LAN). A LAN exists when the servers are geographically close together
(that is, in the same building). Many items accessible via a computer live
on the network, such as websites, email accounts and H:Drives.
- H: Drive
is the personal network space alloted to students, faculty and staff at
Rowan University. The H:Drive is accessible in the same way that a computer's
hard-drive (C:Drive) or any other peripheral drive is accessed. It is
within this area that students, faculty and staff can store documents
for class, business and/or personal use. Within one's H:Drive is a public.WWW
directory for making these files accessible via the web.
- Public.WWW
is a directory that exists within your H:Drive. Any files located within
this directory folder are accessible via your user website at http://users.rowan.edu/~insert
your network username
- Neptune
is just one of the many planets and server directories within Rowan's universe.
Currently Neptune houses the Openarea and WWW directories.
- Openarea
is a sub-directory within Neptune that allows for file sharing across the
network for official Rowan University business.
- WWW
is a sub-directory of WWW which is the directory that houses the Rowan
University website. When files are deposited with the WWW directory,
they are available to web visitors via http://www.rowan.edu.
- FTP
is the acronym for "File Transfer Protocol" and is the function
one uses when transferring content into a website when off campus and/or
not connected to the Rowan University Network directly.
- WebCT
is Rowan University's online courseware system and is available
to all faculty for posting their course information. Rowan University Web
Services is not responsible for WebCT.
- Web Accessible
Email
is available for all faculty and staff members via http://outlook.rowan.edu.
For more information about any of Rowan's email services, please contact
the Support Desk at 856.256.4400 or support@rowan.edu.
- Directory Access
is granted using your Rowan Network username and password. It allows you
to access files within directories within the Openarea and the WWW. You
will need directory access in order to update web files.
- Network
Usernames & Passwords
are given to both full-time faculty, staff and students in order
to access your email, network resources, etc. Problems with network usernames
and passwords can be addressed by the Support Desk at
856.256.4400 or support@rowan.edu.
