Trash Picked: Contemporary Arte Povera

January 12 - February 6, 2009

Opening Reception: January 28, 4:30 - 6:30 PM

Arte Povera ("Poor Art") was an art movement that began in Italy in the late 1960s. Young Italian artists began to use inexpensive or free materials in experimental and innovative ways to create their works. These methodologies have since become common practice in contemporary art. This group exhibit examines how Arte Povera, while a small and short-lived art movement, continues to have relevance with artists working in the 21st century. Artists participating in this exhibition include Alyse Bernstein, Seth Eisen, Geoff Hindle, Scott Kaylor and Jeff Thomas. A Gallery Talk will occur at the onset of the reception. The exhibit is curated by Kathryn McFadden.

DOUBLE BIND: Women Telling it Slant

February 16 - March 20, 2009

Opening Reception: Thursday, March 5, 4:30 - 6:30 PM

A person in a double bind receives a conflicting message, whereby the action taken is wrong no matter what choice she makes. Catch-22s have been used historically to restrict women and challenge their roles as leaders. Considering Emily Dickinson's suggestion to "Tell the truth, but tell it slant", this exhibition will feature works that address or question old-fashioned double binds and new-fangled twists through the artistic device of indirection. Works in the exhibition take on visual strategies such as metaphor, parody, irony and narrative. Artists invited to participate include Jennifer Justice, Jackie Sandro, Julie Saecker Schneider, Sylvia Sleigh and Nancy Wright. This show marks a commemoration of Women's History Month and is curated by Kathryn McFadden.
