When Rowan University and Virtua Health System first joined forces to offer an RN to BSN cohort program for Virtua nurses, over 80 nurses participated. Diane Trump was one of them.

“I was in my 40s when I decided to go back to school,” says Trump, a nurse since 1989. “Jumping into a program completely online didn’t interest me. I wanted to learn in person, but with the flexibility of some of the program being delivered online.”

Rowan’s RN to BSN program offered Trump the convenience, affordability and flexibility that she was looking for.

Soon after her graduation, Virtua announced the creation of community-based health manager positions within their newly formed accountable care organization (ACO.) “The position required a BSN, and thanks to the Rowan degree I had just earned I was able to advance my career and start in this new position from the ground floor.”

Trump provides efficient, community-based healthcare to adults with chronic diseases, to help them manage their conditions at home and avoid more costly and time consuming trips to the hospital.

“I love it,” she says. “There is such a need for this role in the community. In three years I have seen Virtua increase the number of positions of what I do from four to 23.”

Trump has since enrolled in the master’s in nursing program. Impressed by the nursing lab, she says, “I had Advanced Health Assessment there, as well as my hands-on clinical experience. Whatever the instructor needed - heart sounds, respiratory, cranial nerves - there was plenty of equipment, laid out nicely.

“I figured I did well with the undergraduate program, so there’s nothing stopping me from continuing my education and earning my master’s,” she says.
