A Message from John O'Reardon, MD
Professor and Chair Department of Psychiatry
Director of the Center for Mood Disorders and Neuromodulation Therapies RowanSOM

Thank you for your interest in the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. Our mission is to graduate exemplary and empathic psychiatrists who have received outstanding education in all areas of the field, and are prepared to adapt to the ever-changing field of psychiatry. Our residents have gone on to publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at regional and national conferences, complete fellowships spanning the gamut of psychiatry, and I am especially happy to report that many have elected to remain at RowanSOM as faculty members.

The Department of Psychiatry is located in Cherry Hill, NJ, giving residents a unique opportunity to treat patients across a wide socioeconomic spectrum. Residents will gain exposure to inner city and middle class populations, receiving training in both Camden, NJ and Cherry Hill, NJ. In addition, because our department is a leader in the field neuromodulation therapies such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) we attract patients from throughout the Delaware Valley. Neuromodulation therapies are an area of special expertise and all our residents receive training in ECT, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and TMS. Our faculty is both clinically and academically oriented, and several have obtained subspecialty qualifications in cognitive behavior therapy, psychoanalysis, geriatrics, child and adolescent, and psychopharmacology, to name a few. We are also distinguished in being the largest department in the medical school with a total number of faculty in the order of sixty members. We are committed to educating and training medical students and residents, and are always available for mentoring and supervision. A particular strength is our faculty, and they will remain an asset because of their compassion and commitment to excellence.

This is an exciting time for our department. In addition to fellowships in geriatrics and child and adolescent psychiatry, we have recently expanded to include cutting edge fellowships in neuromodulation, research, and psychopharmacology. In 2013 we expect to add a fellowship in consult-liaison. In the Center for Mood Disorders we offer transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and VNS. We also have an active research program in psychopharmacology and neuromodulation. Our faculty has recently increased in size as we expand our clinical and research programs. In addition our residency will increase in size from 12 to 24 residents.

Thank you for your interest in our program, and I look forward to meeting with you in the future.

Cordially,

John O'Reardon MD
