Molecular Biology

Core Facilities

The ES cell and Transgenics Laboratory at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine is open to the scientific community around the nation as well as around the globe.

Mission of the Laboratory

Development and delivery of genome edited mammalian cellular and organismic systems to investigators in the biomedical research communities around the nation as well as around the world to facilitate and foster scientific discoveries, innovations and achievements in the fight against human diseases.

The Laboratory

The newly established laboratory in the Department of Molecular Biology consists of three functional units, the micromanipulation and mouse reproduction unit, the cell culture unit and the molecular biology unit. Each of the units is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, and is staffed with well-trained and experienced scientists. The micromanipulation and mouse reproduction unit is sitting in a barrier animal facility that is accredited by AAALAC and is well recognized for its long history of pathogen-free operations. Dr. Ping Jiang, a faculty member who had directed similar facilities at the Wistar Institute and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for the past ten years, leads the laboratory.

Development and delivery of genome edited organismic systems

  • Generation of transgenic mice by pronuclear injection of DNA transgene constructs
  • Generation of transgenic mice by pronuclear injection of CRISPR/Cas9 constructs
  • Generation of knockout/knockin mice by injection of gene-targeted ES cells into blastocysts
  • Generation of knockout/knockin mice by pronuclear injections of CRISPR/Cas9 constructs
  • Rederivation from cryopreserved embryos

Development and delivery of genome edited cellular systems

  • Establishment of gene-targeted ES cell clones by homologous recombination
  • Establishment of genome edited cell lines by CRISPR/Cas9

We are pleased to announce a new program: Master of Science in Histopathology. In response to increased demand for highly competent technicians in translational research, we have developed this unique, hands-on program to prepare students to conduct biomedical research, including basic molecular and cell biology techniques, as well as the processing and analysis of primary tissue, in translational research.
