You'll have plenty of opportunities to gain valuable real-world experience. Many courses involve a research component, sending you out "into the field" to collect and analyze data. The Field Experience Seminar and internships place you in a variety of settings such as human service agencies, community associations, businesses, research agencies and others. You'll also have opportunity for independent research and study with faculty members. Sociology graduates work in local, state and federal governments, care facilities for the elderly, homes for substance abusers, shelters for teenagers and children, hospitals, correction facilities, private business, consulting firms, research and development companies, the list goes on. Many students go on to graduate school in sociology, social work, urban studies, public administration, education and law.
