Financial Aid & Scholarships

College costs can seem overwhelming, but Rowan University is committed to providing all of its students with a top-quality education within their means. Nearly 70 percent of our students receive some form of financial aid, such as grants and loans or scholarships from federal and state sources, alumni, friends of the University and various other organizations.

Rowan's financial aid staff will review your case on an individual basis and create a financial aid package that suits your needs. It may include a combination of grants, loans and/or work-study funds. In addition, Rowan's scholarship committee will review your admissions application to determine whether you are eligible for one of our many scholarships that recognize academic acheivement.

How to Apply

Application Process
Applying for financial aid at Rowan is easy. There is no separate application. We encourage you to apply regardless of whether or not you feel you are eligible.

We do require you to fill out one separate form, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available from your high school guidance office, Rowan's financial aid office and your local public libraries. The FAFSA also may be completed and filed electronically at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov  We highly recommend filing the FAFSA online.

Why the FAFSA?
Information from the FAFSA feeds into a formula used by the federal government to calculate your expected family contribution to your college expenses. Like most colleges and universities, Rowan uses this formula as a basis for awarding financial aid dollars. Since this formula is standard, your expected family contribution will be the same at every college or university to which you apply. The FAFSA is used not only to apply for federal financial aid but also to apply for State of New Jersey financial aid programs and to qualify for certain loan programs.

Filling Out the FAFSA
Read each question carefully to complete the application. Refer to the instructions as needed and complete the worksheets provided. If you need assistance, please feel free to call Rowan's Financial Aid Office at 856.256.4250. Make sure Rowan's Office of Financial Aid receives your financial report by listing Rowan University in the institution section. Rowan's federal school code is 002609.

Once the FAFSA has been filled out (if filing the paper FAFSA), it must be mailed to the federal processing center. If applying through the Internet, please be sure you and a parent sign the FAFSA. You may e-sign using a PIN or you may print the certification page of the FAFSA and mail it to the federal processing center.

Deadlines
All applicants seeking federal and state aid must file the FAFSA after January 1. The Office of Financial Aid at Rowan University encourages you to file by March 15. After filing your FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) for your records. If you file the FAFSA including Rowan's school code, we will automatically receive your report. New Jersey students will also receive a Student Eligibility Notice (SEN) from the state.

Work Assistance Programs
Rowan's work-study programs provide part-time employment both on- and off-campus. Work-study awards are not credited directly to students' accounts; instead, they earn a paycheck with the understanding that the wages will be used toward meeting educational expenses. The work schedule is built around a student's class schedule. We make every attempt to place students in jobs that relate to their majors, interests or skills.

Federal Work-Study Program (FWS)
The Federal Work-Study Program provides part-time jobs to students who have financial need. FWS awards are not credited directly to a student's account but are part of the overall financial aid package.

Institutional Work-Study Program (IWS)
This program is similar to the Federal Work-Study Program, except that even students who do not have financial need may be employed through it.

Loan Assistance Programs

Federal Stafford Loans
This loan program allows financially needy students who are matriculated in a degree program at least half-time to receive loans up to $3,500 per academic year for freshmen, $4,500 for sophomores and $5,500 for the remaining undergraduate years. Independent undergraduate students may borrow an additional $4,000 for each of their freshman and sophomore years and $5,000 for each of their junior and senior years.

A federal loan can be either subsidized or unsubsidized. If the loan is subsidized, no interest accrues to the borrower (student) while enrolled for at least six credits. If the loan is unsubsidized, interest will accrue to the borrower even while enrolled.

Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)
Regardless of income, parents may borrow up to the cost of attendance per year for each student enrolled at least half-time in college. PLUS loan applications are available in the Office of Financial Aid. For new loans, the interest rate is variable; however, it may not exceed 9%. Repayment begins 60 days after disbursement.

New Jersey CLASS Loans (College Loans to Assist State Students)
This loan program, which is funded and administered by the State of New Jersey, is designed to help students who need funding in addition to the Federal Direct Student Loan. Eligibility is based on credit-worthiness. Students must apply for a Federal Direct Student Loan before they can be approved for a New Jersey CLASS Loan.
