Extension of F-1 or J-1 Status Beyond Your Original Program End Date
Students who need to extend their I-20 or DS-2019 in order to complete their coursework must inform the International Center before their program end date.
• F-1 or J-1 students who will not complete degree requirements and graduate by the expected completion date listed on their current I-20 (field #5) or DS-2019 (field#3) must have their I-20 or DS-2019 extended by an advisor in the International Center prior to the document’s expiration.
• You must submit your extension request no later than two weeks before the document’s expiration.
• Failure to extend an I-20 or DS-2019 prior to its expiration will cause you to fall out of legal status.
• If the expected completion date on your current I-20 or DS-2019 has already passed, you must contact the International Center immediately.
Please note: Delays in completing program requirements, which are caused by academic probation or suspension, are not acceptable reasons for an extension of program.
