Rowan Political Science Professor Available for Media Commentary
Dr. Larry Butler, the author of Claiming the Mantle: How Presidential Nominations are Won and Lost Before the Votes are Cast (Westview Press), is available for comment on President Bush's nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Dr. Butler has written articles on the judicial nomination process for The Hill, a Capitol Hill newspaper and has done election forecasting and analysis for various groups in the D.C. area. He holds a doctoral degree in politics from Princeton University, master?s degrees in political science and economics from George Washington University and George Mason University, respectively, and a bachelor?s degree in economics from Washington & Lee University.
Dr. Butler thinks that this nomination could result in a bloodbath. "The battle has already begun as interest groups on both sides have launched television ads to 'educate' voters about Judge Alito," says Dr. Butler. "Senate Democrats will use these early skirmishes and the hearings to determine if significant public opposition to the nomination can be created. If so, look for a bloodbath that could bring the Senate to a confrontation in which Democrats threaten a filibuster while Republicans prepare the 'nuclear option'."
Dr. Butler is experienced in dealing with the media. He has been interviewed by newspaper, radio and television reporters from across the country.
