Why Study at Rowan

Our program is set in the tradition of a Liberal Arts education. Classes are small (6-15 students) and students work closely with Rowan's award-winning, full-time faculty members and collaborate with other motivated and talented students. In this context, students have the opportunity to both extend their knowledge and enhance their competence in television and media studies and to develop advanced skills in research, writing, analysis, critical reasoning, and problem solving.

Those who will benefit from the MA in Television Studies, and the opportunities we offer, come from a variety of often overlapping backgrounds, including:

  • recent undergraduates seeking the challenge and growth opportunities of advanced study and work in an area they found intellectually and creatively engaging during their undergraduate careers.
  • currently employed teachers seeking greater competence in television and media studies and its related fields of knowledge.
  • students who wish to prepare for advanced graduate work such as a PhD.
  • those seeking a degree necessary to allow them to teach television and media courses at the college level, usually as an adjunct faculty member for a local community college.
  • professionals seeking a means of advancement within their current career or as a means of preparation for a career change.

Several distinctive characteristics of our program derive from Rowan’s strategic pillars of access, affordability, and quality. We seek to make graduate study accessible to all learners by virtue of our program’s flexibility, both in terms of the diverse educational goals our program’s flexible curriculum serves and the flexible pathways to degree completion that it offers. Our faculty understand that most of our students are completing this program while working and/or navigating other responsibilities. While maintaining quality, we seek to offer courses at times and in formats that work for all of our students. We also understand that graduate education is an investment of not only time but also money, and we aim to make our MA affordable not only through Rowan’s affordable tuition rates but also our program’s own scholarships, development grants, and graduate teaching assistantships
