Import Health Advisory

Dear Students, Staff, Faculty and others of the Rowan University Community:

Many of you have seen media reports about Swine Influenza A (swH1N1) illnesses around the world. Currently, there are 40 confirmed cases in the United States with no deaths reported. There are no known or suspected cases at Rowan University. While there is no immediate reason for concern, Rowan University officials are closely monitoring the situation and will keep the campus informed of any important updates. For more information, please see the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ or the World Health Organization (WHO) websites: www.who.org. For specific information on travel precautions visit: www.cdc.gov/travel. You may also link to the CDC daily updates at www.rowan.edu/health.

Students who have flu-like symptoms should contact their primary care provider or the Student Health Center at 856-256-4333. Rowan employees are recommended to follow-up with their primary care provider. Below are some common-sense recommendations from the CDC:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are ill and stay home when you are ill.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing,
  • Wash hands often and before/after eating or congregating such as class or parties.
Use sanitizing hand gel if unable to wash hands.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

If you have further questions, please contact me at 856-256-4500, ext 3348 or pontesn@rowan.edu

Sincerely,
Nancy Pontes

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our Mission
The mission of the Student Health Center (SHC) of Rowan University strives to remove health-related barriers to learning, to promote optimal wellness, to enable clients to make informed decisions about health issues, and to empower students to be self-directed and well informed health care consumers.

Prematriculation Requirements
Before you enter Rowan as a student, you must meet certain requirements pertaining to health information. Health forms are required of all full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students. These forms include: immunizations, phyiscal examination, personal health history and consent, and TB clearance. Other requirements (such as proof of meningitis immunization) may be required for student athletes and students residing on campus. See Required Health Forms for more information.

An Immunization Hold will be placed on a student's records until all required documents are provided. Holds may prevent students from registering for upcoming classes, dropping or adding future classes, or receiving grades, so it is important to turn these documents in as soon as possible.

All full-time students are also required to have health insurance. Students that do not provide proof of their own insurance (by completing a waiver online) will be automatically enrolled in the University's plan provided by UnitedHealthcare. See Health Insurance for more information.

Services Offered
All students who are currently enrolled at Rowan, attending classes, and have submitted a complete medical and immunization record are provided services at the Student Health Center. The SHC focuses on preventive care and the treatment of acute illnesses and injuries. The health service does not take the place of a primary physician. While the center can handle most needs, students with more serious disorders requiring hospitalization, laboratory, diagnostics or specialist care will be referred accordingly. The Health Center does not cover the cost of prescription drugs, laboratory procedures, x-rays, or other referrals.

If a student is referred to another agency or health care provider, it is done at the expense of the student. Prescriptions for medications, referrals for lab work and x-rays are also the responsibility of the student.
