Art that screams speaks directly to our shadow - those dark spots inside of us that we tend to push away. It allows us to consume the scream, validate our pain, anger, frustration and shame, and connect to something outside ourselves to remind us we are not alone. My dissertation will explore the authenticity of a scream and how screaming through the arts can be a method to express & explore intense sensations we all share but usually don’t talk about. Starting with the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind in 1991, and woven through my personal narrative of discovering music, this project will investigate the different modalities of screaming through the arts and examine the impact and actions taken by the audience that consumes art that screams.
